Well, it’s 2023 and another year is off to a start. Gyms are full, liquor bottles are packed away and diets are in full swing.
For a few weeks.
How many times have you done it? Resolve on December 31st that you will lose weight, quit smoking, eat better, go to the gym, quit drinking, blah, blah, blah? How long did you stay with it? How were your results?
It’s easy to resolve something and then fall down and just feel like you’re a failure and then stay down. “Well, there’s always next year.” Really? What if there isn’t ‘next year’?
A resolution is a “firm decision to do or not do something”. Therefore, you resolve and make a firm decision and then when you can’t, or won’t, you give up and accept defeat. You have left yourself no path for adjustment. 100% in means 100% out.
An intention is “an aim, or a plan”. Ahhhh, there it is. A plan that can be adjusted, but still with a goal in mind. An aim. Think about it like this: You aim an arrow at a target. Of course, you want to hit the bullseye, but even if your aim is a bit off, you still can hit the target and accomplish something. Who would ever quit archery if they didn’t hit the bullseye the first time?
So this year, don’t ‘resolve’ but instead ‘intend’. Here are my intentions for 2023:
Gain control of my health, mainly cardiac and diabetes
Reach and maintain a healthy weight, through exercise and eating proper foods
Journal every day
Create content in 2 new areas
Develop at least 1 additional income stream, no matter how small, through leadership coaching
Spend equal if not more quality time for me as I spend for work
Be a better leader in ALL areas of my life, including leading me
Those a just a few. I can add to if I want. If circumstances call for it, I can adjust. I have a plan and an aim. Just hit the target. Progress, not perfection.
What are YOUR intentions this year? I’d love to see them and share them if you’d like. Leadership is a team sport after all!
Lead Forward!

PS! Special note! I will start adding video content for paid subscribers starting next week, so sign up now and don’t miss out! I’m charging the very minimum that Substack will let me. I’ll try to add in enough perks that it’s worth the small cost. (But there will always be a free email!)
My intention word for the year is INDEFATIGABLE!
Great advice Chief!
