“It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!” “The sun is over the yardarm somewhere!”
All calls to that time of day, cocktail time!
Man, what’s better than a nice cocktail at the end of a hectic day? A cool adult beverage at a beach bar? A cold beer after mowing the lawn?
You get the point. You thirsty yet?
This email isn’t actually about drinking.
Yet.
The thing that I’ve found, the thing that relaxes me at the end of those crappy days, isn’t the alcohol. No, not at all.
It’s the process of making a cocktail. The event, the ingredients, the time, the focus.
I like whiskey drinks. A Manhattan, an Old Fashioned…those are fun drinks to make.
The process of ice, measuring the whiskey, the bitters on a sugar cube, an orange peel being expressed. A ritual, a process, a thing that focuses me, calms me and sets my mind in the frame of ‘end of day’.
With so many of us working from home, me included, it’s hard to make the time distinction between home and work, since home is work and work is now home.
And that’s not bad. The new normal will be our work is where we are. So be it.
But we will need those traditions, those small things that bring us out of work mode and into we’re home, time to relax mode.
Let’s have a drink! Skol, cheers, salute, here’s to us and those like us!
Lead from the front!
